Dengue is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms typically begin three to fourteen days after infection. These may include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pain, and a characteristic skin rash. In some cases, the disease can develop into a more severe form called severe dengue, which can be fatal.
Dengue is a major public health concern in many parts of the world, particularly in Southeast Asia, the Western Pacific, and the Americas. The World Health Organization estimates that there are 390 million dengue infections per year, resulting in approximately 20,000 deaths.
